When Petey and his prairie dog coterie are found on the school playground, the students embark on a mission. They must find out everything they can about this keystone species and then help find them a new home. “Fun Facts” about other prairie species are interspersed throughout the story, which explores themes of wildlife management and working together to find solutions. Children AND their parents will enjoy this funny and insightful book.

I love it! love it! love it! It is really lovely and clear and just what children would want to hear about! Well done. The illustrations are very realistic and I like them very much.

Saving Petey is a disarmingly light-hearted story with a deadly-serious message. You can make a difference when you learn the facts and turn concern into action. The illustrations are a whimsical delight. Animals come alive with expressive eyes and wry glances. The yipping chatter conveys as much as the LOUD human reactions (yes, the CAPS work wonders!) The glossary is kid-friendly and the Fun Facts really are fun to read—and remember.

Both me and my daughter love "Saving Petey." It is a compelling story of caring children and adults coming together to help save the lives of a colony of prairie dogs that are so critical to the prairie ecosystem. Along the way we experience the misadventures of "Petey" the prairie dog as he meets and learns about all the fascinating mammals, reptiles, and insects of the prairie. The watercolor illustrations of all the animals and landscapes are gorgeous! There are also photos in the back of the the actual rescue and charming drawings done by the children involved. I highly recommend this book because not only is it beautifully conceived, but also educational and noble in it its cause to help the environment and wildlife. A great read for the whole family!!!
